Bristol
Background Information
Bristol is the regional capital of the south - west of England. It is the ninth largest city in the UK with a population of around 400,000. The city of Bristol
is an old historic city and port almost 1000 years old. The city is located in a bowl bisected by the River Avon. The road network is radial in nature with
most through routes passing through the city centre. Large numbers of commuters and shoppers enter and leave the city each day adding considerably to its
daytime population. The port of Bristol moved from the city centre to the mouth of the Avon at Avonmouth during the nineteenth century. The riverside
marshland where the Avon and Severn meet was developed as an industrial area during the twentieth century. Most polluting industries are located in
this Severnside industrial region.
