Air Quality Assessment
The air quality monitoring network of the City of Zurich consists of three constantly operated
measuring stations representing the following pollution situations:
Traffic exposed:
Schimmelstrasse:
- transit road,
- stop and go situation
- 27’000 vehicles/day,
- ~7% heavy duty traffic
Schwamendingen:
- highway,
- 110’000 vehicles/day,
- ~7% heavy duty traffic
City background
Stampfenbachstrasse:
- moderate and fluent traffic,
- 7’000 vehicles/day,
- heavy duty traffic < 2%
Kaserne:
- no traffic
- site of the national air pollution monitoring network
City outskirts
- Heubeeribuel: school building, no traffic in closer vicinity
Additionally a mobile measuring station is used for hot spot measurements and for accompany-ing
city development projects.
The monitoring sites have been supplemented by a dense network of nitrogen dioxide passive samplers
during the last 15 years, providing additional information. This economic measuring method allows
to gather information about hot-spots and to answer imminent questions for the inhabitants.
