Air Quality Assessment
Network of Air Quality Monitoring Stations
A network of precision analysers across the city measures pollutants such as nitrogen dioxide, particulates, ozone, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide.
Leicester is also measuring roadside pollution at 10 monitoring stations; six of them are Apollo monitors that measure CO, NO2 and SO2 and four Golden
monitors that also monitor PM10. Measurements from this network together with modelling studies have allowed us to map where the air quality hotspots are.
Data Ownership
All of the data belongs to Leicester City Council excluding the AUN (Automatic Urban Network) station in Leicester City Centre, which belongs to the
Central Government.
Efforts with regard to emission and air quality modelling
The city has for some years had an active policy of environmental improvement, which has included both urban regeneration and a transport plan aimed at
reducing reliance on the private car and encouraging a modal shift towards public transport, cycling and walking. Road traffic estimates of vehicle
kilometres travelled in 2003 within Leicester - 750 million vehicle kilometres and within Leicestershire 2020 million kilometres due to a high percentage
of road users are commuting from the County in to the City to work. Measures taken have included the introduction of strict traffic controls (traffic calming,
speed restrictions, one-way streets), improved bus services (including a real-time service information at bus stops), dedicated networks of bus lanes and
cycle ways.
