Air Quality Assessment
The history of air pollution monitoring in the Statutory City of Brno dates back to 1971, when the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute was established. In 1979 the City Sanitary Station started air pollution measurement (at present, the Station is administrated by the Institute of Public Health Brno). In 1997 the system of air pollution monitoring in the ownership of the City of Brno was put into service.

Currently, the air quality monitoring in the city of Brno is ensured by six stationary monitoring stations of the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute (three automatic stations - one in hot spot category and three manual stations), two stationary stations of the Institute of Public Health Brno (manual) and five stationary stations of the Statutory City of Brno (automatic). A mobile measurement vehicle for the air quality monitoring is operated by the Institute of Public Health Brno and the Statutory City of Brno.

The equipment of the stationary stations is continuously extended by new measuring instruments. Since 2000, the measurement was supplemented by O3 measurement, PM10 and PM2,5 measurement. The present status of the measuring parameters at the automatic stationary station is given in the table no.1.

The stationary stations as well as the mobile means administrated by the Statutory City of Brno have been in automatic mode since the beginning. Data generated by the stationary stations are transferred by an on-line radio network to the central laboratory where it is processed; data measured by mobile instruments is recorded by computer technology and once it is downloaded it is processed again in the central laboratory.
The automatic stationary stations of the air pollution monitoring station system of the Statutory City of Brno were incorporated into the nationwide system of air quality monitoring - the Automated air pollution monitoring of the CR on 1.1.2007, following an audit performed by the administrator of the Information air quality system (ISKO). After checking all the data measured at the stations of the Statutory City of Brno by the administrator of the ISKO, the data generated by these stations was included in this system retrospectively from 1.1.2000.
