Monitoring site at the ring road around Amsterdam-West. |

Amsterdam
Background Information
Amsterdam has a population of 763.000 inhabitants. Located on 10 kilometres West of the city is the National airport
Schiphol. The seaport is located Northwest of the city. There is no heavy industry directly surrounding the city.
There are quite a few large office areas surrounding the city.
The spatial mix of a relatively high population density with major traffic arteries (three major highways
are crossing the city) causes air quality problems, mainly related to NO2 and PM. Specifically on the west side
the highway A10, the ring road that encircles the city, lies only at several meters from the first houses
(see the photograph).
